Praying the Rosary well should be one’s primary concern.

Praying the Rosary well should be one’s primary concern.

A good quote about doing what’s immediately required of us:

It is true, considering things in themselves, that the conversion of a soul is, without doubt, infinitely more acceptable to the Divine Majesty than the mortification of a disorderly affection. Yet, every person, in his own particular sphere, should begin with what is immediately required of him. Now what God expects of us, above all else, is a serious application to conquering our passions; and this is more properly the accomplishment of our duty than if, with uncontrolled appetite, we should do Him a greater service.

St. Louis-Marie promises that if we pray and preach the Rosary, we will learn more from it than from books. Rosary is the Rose of methods of prayers, (it is the best) and therefore experience in praying the Rosary and finding out how to pray it will profit us more than from reading spiritual books.

There is certainly nothing more useful than prayer.[remember that Rosary is the prayer of prayers] Therefore, we ought to entertain great esteem and love for it, and employ every effort to make it well.—-St. Vincent de Paul

The incorrupt saint St. Germaine’s only ‘book’ was the Rosary.

Since studying anything other than that relates to the Rosary, (when one has not yet attained perfect spirit of prayer of the Rosary) is not GOD”s WILL, GOD will punish our substantial diversions to even good things (such as reading a non Rosary related book at the time at which I should read more about the Rosary and think about the Rosary and writing down how to pray it).

I am trying to find out how to pray the Rosary well.

St. Louis-Marie said that those who pray the Rosary everyday will not be led astrayed by the devil. But many people claim to pray the Rosary everyday but have contradicting opinions in doctrines. This means that most people are not saying the Rosary correctly. I believe that the most common error is praying the Rosary fast (15-20 min per 5 decade). It should be said quite slow about one hour per 5 decade, as St. Francis de Sales did, who made the vow of praying the daily chaplet (5 decades) before going to sleep everyday, despite his busy schedule as a bishop.

If we have the time, 15 decade Rosary should be said, totalling 3 hrs. If we can’t find the time to pray 5 decades at once (an hour), we could, as St. Louis-Marie says, pray a decade at a time (10 minutes). St. Louis-Marie said that we can even pray while working when we can’t find the time. The Ave Maria was always on the lips of Bl. Alain de la Roche, and a Korean martyr used to pray the Rosary always,  even when sweeping the floor.

There seems to be something special about 3 hour prayer. Our Lord JESUS prayed 3 hrs in the Garden of Olives, and in a Catholic story (Mystery of the Wizard Clip) we read that a Voice told the Livingstons to pray for 3 hrs straight. ‘Often the Voice would come and exclaim, “I want prayers” It would awaken Mr. and Mrs. Livingston at night and tell them to pray hard for perseverance and for sinners. Sometimes it made them pray for three hours; they admitted that it did not seem to be more than a few minutes.’

How long should the Rosary take?

I’ve been thinking of how long it should take to say the Rosary. I feel that it should be prayed much slower than normal (15-25min per 5 decade).

The following passages are excerpted from:,M1

From his youth, Francis de Sales had

formed the habit of saying his chaplet

daily. Later, he made a vow to do so… To recite it, he employed

a considerable time which seemed

to him brief,—an hour [60 minutes] said St. de Chantal,—lingering in pious consideration on

the mysteries of the Rosary; it was a

familiar, childlike talk with his heavenly

Mother, and he readily forgot himself

near her.

In the Secret of the Rosary it says St. Dominic made the people say the Rosary extremely slowly (although traslated as ‘very slowly,’ an auto-translation gave the more emphatic ‘extremely slowly’) to drive out 15,000 devils out of a heretic who made fun of the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. I think the best way to find out without any doubt is to find out how long it took St. Bernadette to say the Rosary when OLO Lourdes herself was with her (Our Lady only said the Glory Be part because she is not a sinner, and PATER and AVE is for sinners only).

5 decade slow is better than 15 decade fast
